I am convinced that mushroom farming can provide a solid income because it is what I do, although not professionally, and now, with the help of the Institute for Youth Development KULT I will be able to significantly improve and increase my crop.

On January 9, 2015, the Institute for Youth Development KULT signed a grant contract with Ms Sabira Bilić, as a form of donation which will enable her to rebuild the business she had before the floods – mushroom farming.

The families from flood-affected areas in BiH are still struggling. Humanitarian aid was crucial in the immediate aftermath of the floods. Today, the citizens from flood-affected areas are thinking about self-sustainability and starting their own business to ensure an income necessary for a normal life. Therefore, the Institute for Youth Development KULT, by signing a grant contract with the Bilić family enabling them to rebuild a greenhouse for mushroom farming, contributed to rebuilding normal life in the flood-affected areas in BiH.

In the aftermath of the May floods, the Institute for Youth Development KULT initiated the “NE SMIJEMO STATI” campaign to help the population in flood-affected areas in BiH. Remaining true to the campaign’s name, we have not stopped and we certainly will now. Our intention is to help the affected population not only by providing humanitarian aid, but offering support in building sustainability which will enable people to earn a living. Our efforts are currently focused on helping the Bilić family from Maglaj whose entrepreneurial potential we recognized. We intent to provide the Bilić family with financial funds as well as advisory support, helping them secure an adequate income, and we are hoping to secure funds for additional assistance, said Jasmin Bešić, Executive Director of the Institute.

The Bilić family is only one of the families in Maglaj who found themselves in existential danger after the floods left them without material possessions and adequate living conditions. That is why the Institute for Youth Development KULT decided to help the Bilić family by procuring construction material and manpower for building a space that the family will use for mushroom farming which will provide them with an adequate income.

We want to be professional mushroom farmers so that we could ensure a livelihood for our family. I am convinced that mushroom farming can provide a solid income because it is what I do, although not professionally, and now, with the help of the Institute for Youth Development KULT I will be able to significantly improve and increase my crop. I am sure that crop yields will be good and that many will be interested in our products. Now we need to work together to rebuild the space we used for growing mushrooms - where there is a will there is a way and success is inevitable, said Sabira Bilić after signing the contract.

Members of the Bilić family are unemployed and currently living in temporary housing in Maglaj, which is cold and barely fit for human habitation. There are also two underage members of the Bilić family, aged 12 and 15, whose growth and development will be vastly helped through this type of support provided to the family.

I hope mom and dad’s business will be successful. They work really hard and my brother and I help whenever we have, but we have school too. I know that a lot of people never tried our mushrooms, but my mom’s oyster mushroom pizza is great and I’m always happy when she makes it. My brother prefers the mushroom and meat pita, a specialty in our home, said Lamija Bilić, the youngest member of the family.

Members of the Bilić family are prepared to work and support themselves through self-employment which will help them improve their living conditions, perform reconstruction works on their house as well as contribute to the normal growth and development of their children.
